OPERATED WINDOW SHADES

Draper manufactures the following manually operated, roll-up fabric
window shades for sunlight control and room darkening:
Chain
and Clutch Operated FlexShade
Crank
Operated FlexShade
Spring
Roller Operated FlexShade
Access
FlexShade
For each Draper window shade there are options for size, fabric, operator, operator location, method of installation, hardware, and hardware finish. Refer to Draper product literature for availability of options and selection guidelines. Various options are listed in this specification section, but not all options apply to all window shades. The specifier will need to select the appropriate options, verify their availability, and delete non-applicable models and options.
When motorized Draper window shades are to
be specified, use SECTION 12493 - MOTORIZED WINDOW SHADES. If a completely opaque window shade system is
required, use SECTION 12494 - OPAQUE WINDOW SHADE SYSTEM. If fixed window panels with open weave glare
control fabric are to be specified, use SECTION 12495 - SUN CONTROL
PANELS. If either manual or motorized
skylight shades are to be specified use SECTION 12496 - SKYLIGHT SHADES. Draper's Access Dual Roller FlexShade
window shades which can accommodate two types of fabric shade or shade and
projection screen combination are specified in SECTION 12497 - DUAL ROLLER
WINDOW SHADES. Lastly, manual or
motorized, vertical folding window shades can be specified using SECTION 12498
- VERTICAL FOLDING WINDOW SHADES. *****
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY

1.2 SUBMITTALS
A. Submit in accordance with Section 01330 - Submittal Procedures:
1. List of proposed products and product data.
2. Shop drawings showing window openings, dimensions, and attachment method.
3. Samples [for selection by Architect]:
a. Fabrics.
b. Metal finishes.
4. Window Shade Schedule listing rooms, field verified window dimensions, quantities, type of shade, fabric, and color.
5. Manufacturer's installation and maintenance instructions.
1.3 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
***** In order to reduce potential damage to shades, it is desirable to deliver and install shades after construction is essentially complete. Draper Chain and Clutch Operated FlexShades and Access FlexShades can be installed in aluminum pockets and housings which are designed for early installation as part of ceiling installation. Shade and operating mechanism can be installed later. *****
A. Do not deliver window shades until building is enclosed and construction within spaces where shades will be installed is substantially complete.
B. Deliver products in manufacturer's original, unopened, undamaged containers with labels intact.
C. Label containers and shades according to Window Shade Schedule.
1.4 WARRANTY

5 years warranty is provided for clutch operating mechanism of Draper Chain
and Clutch Operated FlexShade. All
other shade models and parts are covered by a one year warranty which is
standard with typical general conditions of the contract and does not need to
be re-stated in this section. Include
the following paragraph if Chain and Clutch Operated FlexShades are
specified. *****
A. Provide under provisions of Section [01700 - Contract Closeout] [__________]: 5 years warranty against defects in materials and workmanship for clutch operating mechanism.

FlexShade, Crank Operated FlexShade, and Spring Roller Operated
FlexShade. Select type and model of
window shade being specified and desired attributes from the following

There are six methods for mounting manually operated Draper window
shades:
Mounted

Wall
mounted and overlapping window opening.
Ceiling
mounted and overlapping window opening.
Recessed
in ceiling and surface mounted with screws to walls.
Recessed
in ceiling and surface mounted with screws to structural ceiling support.
Recessed
in ceiling and suspended from structure with suspension rods and brackets. This option is only available for Access

C. Operation: Bead chain and clutch operating mechanism allowing shade to stop when chain is released. Designed never to need adjustment or lubrication. Provide preset limit stops to prevent shade from being raised or lowered too far.
1. Clutch mechanism: Fabricated from high carbon steel and molded fiberglass reinforced polyester or injected molded nylon.

Provide roller idler assembly of molded nylon and zinc-plated steel pin. Sliding pin to allow easy installation and removal of roller.

F. Endcaps: Stamped steel with universal design suitable for mounting to ceiling, wall, and jamb. Provide size compatible with roller size and fasteners appropriate for installation conditions. Finish to be [[black] [white] [ivory] [charcoal bronze] baked enamel paint.] [clear anodized aluminum.]

Draper Crank Operated FlexShades and Chain and Clutch Operated
FlexShades can be provided as multi-panel units on a single roller up to a
maximum width of 16 feet (4.9 m). Use
the following paragraph to specify carrier bearings required for multi-panel
installations. *****
H. Carrier bearings: Stamped steel with molded nylon for supporting multiple shades on single roller. Bearing suitable for ceiling or mullion mounting. Provide one carrier bearing between each pair of adjoining shades.
***** Two or three Crank Operated FlexShades can be controlled from one crank with FlexShade Coupling System. Shades can be different widths but total group width cannot exceed 24 feet (7.3 m) and all rollers must be same diameter. *****
I. Coupling system: Provide system to operate [2] [3] shades from single crank by coupling shade rollers together. System to consist of [wall] [ceiling] bearing brackets and male and female couplings. Crank to be located [right] [left] hand side of group when facing window from interior.
J. Shade slat: Minimum 1/8 by 1 inch (3 mm by 25 mm) aluminum slat encased in heat seamed hem.

Chain and Clutch Operated FlexShades can be provided with and
installed in pockets fabricated from either sheet or extruded aluminum. Pockets are designed to be installed prior to
or as part of ceiling system installation.
Window shade assembly can be site installed later after construction
operations that might damage shade are complete. There are two types of pocket, Type C
Pocket and Type D Pocket.
Include the following paragraph if aluminum pockets are required. *****
K. Shade pocket: Rectangular pocket designed for recessed ceiling installation of window shades; Type [C] [D] FlexShade Pocket as manufactured by Draper, Inc.

For Type C FlexShade Pocket use the following paragraphs. Type C Pocket will only accommodate
limited size shade bundles. Shade bundle
size will vary with height of screen and fabric type. Contact Draper to verify that specified size
shade and type of fabric will fit Type C Pocket. *****
1. Material: Sheet aluminum alloy with white epoxy paint finish.
2. Size: [3-1/4 by 3-1/4 inches] [83 mm by 83 mm].
3. Closure panel: Removable closure panel clips to bottom of pocket to form [1 inch] [25 mm] opening for passage of shade.
4. Clutch unit integral with endcap and includes nylon chain guides and leveling mechanism.

For Type D FlexShade Pocket use the following paragraphs. *****
1. Material: Extruded aluminum alloy with white epoxy paint finish.
2. Size: [4-1/2 by 4-1/2 inches] [114 mm by 114 mm].
3. Closure panel: Removable closure panel clips to bottom of pocket to form [1-1/8 inch] [29 mm] opening for passage of shade.
4. Provide pocket with [7/8 inch] [22 mm] lip at lower edge for support of acoustical ceiling panel.
***** Endcaps for Type D FlexShade Pocket can be provided with or without acoustical ceiling panel support lip. *****

***** Type D FlexShade Pocket can be provided with corner sections where window shade recess continues around two walls. Pocket ends can also be provided. *****
6. Corners: Welded one-piece aluminum sections connecting to and matching pockets to allow continuous shade recess at ceiling corners.
7. Pocket ends: Welded one-piece aluminum sections connecting to and matching pockets.

***** Draper manually operated window shades can be installed in a ceiling recess site constructed from light gage metal framing and gypsum board or other materials. For this condition, use the following paragraph and subparagraphs to specify aluminum removable closure panel to be installed leaving a minimal slot for passage of shade. *****
L. Closure panel: For site constructed ceiling recesses, provide removable closure panel to minimize slot for shade passage but allowing access to shade for maintenance.
1. Material: Aluminum alloy with white epoxy paint finish.
2. Closure width: [2 inches] [3-1/4 inches] [50 mm] [83 mm].
3. Provide continuous wall clip, [1-13/16 by 1/4 inch] [46 mm by 6 mm], for snap-in attachment of closure panel without fasteners.
